Stepping On Class (Sept 10 - Oct. 22)

Monday, September 10, 2018 10:00am - 12:00am

Stepping On is a workshop offered in Monroe County that helps older adults prevent falls. The seven -week workshop will be held at Tomah Memorial Hospital, Classroom C (lower level) and will run from Sept. 10 – Oct. 22. Classes will meet on Mondays from 10 a.m.-noon and designed for adults 60 and older, who live in their own homes or apartments and who, for the most part, do not rely on a walker, scooter or wheelchair while indoors. Registration is required and the deadline is Sept. 4.

Stepping On will help participants identify why they fall and different ways to prevent falls, including strength and balance exercises, home safety check suggestions and a medication review. The workshop is both for people who have fallen and for people who fear falling. During the seven-week session, participants receive education and support from trained leaders, health care professionals and other workshop participants, learning strength and balance exercises, medications’ impact on falls, vision, safe footwear, home modifications and community safety.

Participants will leave with more strength, achieve better balance, and experience a feeling of confidence and independence as a result of performing various exercises and sharing personal falls experiences as a group. “It is amazing to see the change that occurs after people go through the workshop,” says Stepping On facilitator, Kayleigh Day. “People are more confident, energetic, and have a new support system in place, all of which helps them lead a healthier life.”
