Niebuhr Receives Patriot Award

The Wisconsin Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense (DoD) office, has recognized Tomah Memorial Hospital medical surgical dept., director Bev Niebuhr, RN, BSN, with a Patriot Award in recognition of her support of a TMH employee that served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.

Niebuhr was nominated for the award by TMH medical surgical dept. coordinator and United States Coast Guard Reserve Petty Officer Jessye Buswell, RN, BSN, who was deployed for reserve service recently.

“Bev always takes into account my required reserve drill periods and active duty for training attendance when scheduling me at the hospital,” said Buswell. “When I was deployed for 60 days with short notice, she was incredibly supportive and allowed for a smooth transition. While deployed, she checked on me while I was serving, at least once per week and also checked on the well-being of my family.”

ESGA officials say supportive supervisors are critical to maintaining the strength and readiness of the nation’s Guard and reserve units. “The Patriot Award was created by ESGR to publically recognize individuals who provide outstanding patriotic support and cooperation to their employees, who like the citizen warriors before them, have answered their nation’s call to serve,” said Mike Williams, Wisconsin ESGR state chair.

ESGR seeks to foster a culture in which all employees support and value the employment and military service of members of the National Guard and Reserve in the United States.

ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members, and acting as the employer’s principal advocate within DoD.

Paramount to ESGR’s mission is encouraging employment of Guardsman and reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
