About TMH
A man saw an old woman stooped over on a beach covered with starfish. He asked her what she was doing to which she replied,
“I am throwing the starfish back into the sea; if I don’t they will
dry up and die.”
Laughing the man said, “But Old Woman, there are so many
starfish on the beach, you can’t possibly take care of all of them.”
She picked up a starfish and threw it back into the sea. Then
looking at the man, she said, “I just took care of that one.”
Tomah Memorial Hospital is about “taking care of you” and focusing the full resources of our organization to help each individual patient. The parable above, which is the inspiration for our starfish logo, continues with the old woman returning to the beach the next morning only to discover the man and his children busily throwing starfish back into the sea. He looked up and smiled, “we are here to take care of a few more starfish.”
Tomah Memorial Hospital is doctors and nurses, dieticians and medical technicians, housekeepers and bookkeepers, and rehab therapists, administrators and environmental custodians, system engineers and volunteers – whose collective actions make a difference for our entire community.

History
After years of planning and the generous donation by many residents of our community, Tomah Memorial Hospital became a reality when it opened its doors as a 29-bed hospital on April 7, 1952. Our community-minded friends gave their time and donations once again in 1955 to help construct the first addition to the original building, which increased the bed capacity to 57.
In July of 1957, a 27-bed nursing home was opened on the ground floor level of the Hospital. The nursing home bed capacity increased as more space became available in the years that followed but in 1974 the nursing home closed due to financial considerations.
Expansion of the Hospital progressed in 1966 with a major addition of the north and south patient wings. Additional changes in patient service areas occurred in the Laboratory in 1972; Radiology in 1975; and the Emergency Department and ambulance entrance in 1980. The need for an updated family-centered Obstetrics Department was recognized, and in response, work on a contemporary Obstetrics Department, named the New Beginnings Birth Center, was completed in 1984.
The need for an updated and expanded Emergency and Outpatient Department was met in 1994 with a major building project that also included renovation of some of the original 1952 structure to provide a customer-friendly health care facility.
Recently, a nearly $10-million in construction and renovation work has been completed including a 20,000 sq. ft. building and renovation project, which was finished in the spring of 2005. Also, $1 million worth of work added an 800 sq. ft. addition that now houses a state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) unit on the south side of TMH near the hospital’s Specialty Clinic.
In addition to the space for the new MRI, the construction added radiology equipment for x-rays, 3 new exam rooms and a new pharmacy hood that allows for chemo therapy to be mixed in the new space, closer to where patients will receive their treatment at the recently remodeled TMH Specialty Clinic.
The growth at Tomah Memorial has been a commitment by the facility and Board of Directors to provide high-quality care right here in Tomah.
